Sponsorships available: please call 973-777-5929 or email Rabbi Eisenman at . image About Rav Hamburger The Ashkenazic Jewish tradition is the cumulative product of two millennia of brilliant scholars and dedicated community leaders. The communities of Germany flourished for centuries, enriching the Jewish world, nourishing the precious heritage of Sinai, and willingly giving their lives to sanctify Hashem's Name.
        Machon Moreshes Ashkenaz is revitalizing the spiritual treasures of Ashkenazic Jewry through its research. A descendant of the Chasam Sofer and Rav Shlomo Ansbacher of Nuremberg, Rav Hamburger has devoted his life's work to collecting, archiving and publishing materials pertaining to German Jewry’s historic, halachic and musical traditions.
        R. Elazar Menachem Man Shach zt"l inspired Rav Hamburger to publish the sefer Meshichei Sheker u'Misnagdeihem, which has recently been expanded and re-released. Rav Shach, zt"l, stressed the importance of following in the paths of our fathers that have been handed down to us from generation to generation, whether relating to minhogim, beliefs, or ideas. We are not permitted to seek new views to accelerate the redemption, or new opinions about guarding the Torah.

        Halachos That Apply Before Shabbos

        a.. Bring your 'Tisha Bav' non-leather shoes to Shul before Shabbos.

        b.. Some Shuls (Ahavas Israel included) will be davening on Motzei Shabbos (Saturday night)later than usual (we will be davening at 9:15 pm which is 72 minutes after sunset, therefore, according to many poskim Shabbos has already ended by 8:58 pm; (unless you are machmir to wait 72 minutes), and therefore Shabbos will already have ended. Therefore, one should say after 8:58 pm: "HaMavdil Bein Kodesh L'chol" and then change to Tisha Bav shoes and then thy may drive to Shul.

        Shabbos Kodesh

        a.. Please note, Shabbos is Shabbos! None of the Halachos of Aveilos (mourning) apply!

        b.. The Shabbos meals should be regular with the following differences:

        1.. No food may be consumed after 7:59 pm!!!
        2.. Therefore- there will not be Shalosh Seudas (The Third Meal) in Shul this Shabbos.
        3.. The final Mincha in Ahavas Israel this Shabbos is 6:15 pm.
        4.. However, with the exception of not eating or drinking, none of the other halachos of Tisha Bav apply.
        5.. One may not change into their Tisha Bav shoes prior to 8:58 pm and after reciting HaMavdil Bein Kodesh L'chol.
        6.. One should not sit on the floor until after 8:58 and reciting HaMavdil.

        Shalosh Seudas and the Seudas HaMefsekes THIS IS THE MOST MIS-UNDERSTOOD!

        • This year we DO NOT eat the egg and the ashes!
        • The last meal you will eat before the fast is Shalosh Seudas and it is a regular Shalosh Seudas!
        • Perhaps one should not have guests and make a big party; however, the menu can even be meat!
        • It is a regular Shabbos Shalosh Seudas. There is no eggs and ashes this Shabbos!!!
        • All eating and drinking must stop by 7:59 pm on Shabbos day!

        Havdalah

        • We will recite the Brocha: Borei Meorei HaEish in Shul on a multi-wicked Havdalah candle prior to the reading of Eichah on Saturday night.
        • You can also recite the Brocha at home after 8:58 pm on a multi-wicked Havdalah candle for your entire family and then proceed to Shul.
        • The remainder of Havdalah (the Brocha of HaMavdil) will be recited on Sunday night after the fast.
        • Havdalah on Sunday night will consist of a cup of wine or grape juice (even though it is after Tisha Bav- wine and/or grape juice is permitted for Havdalah) and the Brocha of HaMavdil. The Brocha on the besamim (spices) is omitted this year as are the pesukim of Hinei Kel...
        • If you have a psak to eat on Tisha Bav, (women included) you must make Havdalah prior to eating.
        • If you are making Havdalah on Tisha Bav itself- either on Saturday night or on Sunday day- you may make Havdalah on wine and/or grape juice.

        The Fast Itself

        • Tisha Bav is forbidden in five restrictions
        1. eating, drinking (counted as one);
        2. wearing leather shoes (leather belts are no problem);
        3. anointing (deodorants are allowed (and recommended if you are coming to Shul);
        4. bathing (we wash up to end of the fingers for 'nagel vasser' in the morning and if one's hands become soiled such as after changing a baby etc. one may wash to rid oneself of the dirt);
        5. Family togetherness (couples should treat the day as they do when family togetherness restrictions apply.

        • We do not learn Torah on Tisha Bav;
        • We do not say 'hello' the entire day.
        • All of these restrictions begin at 7:59 pm on Shabbos August 9th and continue until 8:52 on Sunday August 10th.
        • We also sit on chairs or cushions which are within 12 inches of the ground on Tisha Bav at night and the day of Tisha Bav until halachik noon.
        • At 1:02 pm on Sunday August 10th one may sit on a regular high chair.
        • This is the only restriction which is relaxed at 'Chatzos' (halachik noon), everything else continues until 8:52 on Sunday night.

        Sunday Night - After the Fast

        • The fast ends on Sunday night at 8:52 pm.
        • After the fast Havdalah will be recited as mentioned above.
        • Sunday night, with the exception of Havdalah, one may not drink wine, eat meat, do laundry, listen to music, shave or get a haircut, bathe or swim until 1:02 pm on Monday, August 11th.
